The idea for this series had lived with me for years before the first image was actually made. Fragments of it would come into my head and I would see an orange glow and shadows of figures, hands and feet flying by in a lunatic dance. I would feel the heat and the smell of the fire and hear flutes. I loved coming to that place: while it was not necessarily a place of graceful movement, or any kind of civilized behavior, it was definitely a place of release. I knew that around the fire there was an endless steppe at night, and I did not know how the characters that were dancing there made it to this place. Possibly they all came the same way I did: by suddenly stumbling upon it in the midst of their dreaming. Or maybe the steppe did physically exist there somewhere and they came on foot from some nearby villages, I don’t know. I especially loved listening to it. The music was that of drums and pipes and flutes building up into a frenzy. The voices also came, as snippets of songs, laughter and grunting. I am sure that vast quantities of wine were involved. I had carried this place inside me for years and now, finally, I made a physical link to it in the form of these prints. For myself, I know that I will be going there again and again, it is with me all the time and it makes me very happy.
The series is evolving and a couple of more prints are coming. Please click on a thumbnail to see the large image.
