This is the third year we are doing the Calendar Project. Eugenia Oganova and Isabelle Lambert of Energy Pulse channel the information and write the text that I “translate” into images to the best of my ability.
It is very unusual for me to work in collaboration. I am pretty guarded when my art work is concerned and can not imagine anyone coming into my magic space and leaving their imprint there. So it is a real testament to the trust in my two wonderful partners who let me explore and merge with their text and discover my own personal interpretations and, in their turn, trust me to go in the right direction. For a time I drop everything and breathe, live and dream only the calendar. The imagery of the text is so complex, multi-layered and intense that it would be impossible (at least for me) to approach it logically and structurally. It has to grow organically out of the deepest places in my mind. As an artist I have to not only come up with the unusual visual interpretations (how do you paint “the birth of Sound” or “exploding spheres of Void”?) but also balance the rhythms of changes from one element to another, fitting them visually into coherent compositions. Some months come to me quickly upon the reading of the text and then take just some skill and effort to paint, and others take several days of beating my head against the wall trying to imagine the space and then multiple re-paintings. But the result is always worth the effort!
It is surprising how much different years vary in feeling! If 2009 felt Fiery and almost crackly, 2010 feels much more fluid, almost viscous, like a strong blood flow (I found myself constantly inventing new ways of painting Water).
